Over the past decade or so, systems integration has become a key factor in the operations, strategy and competitive advantage of major corporations in a wide variety of sectors (i.e. computing, automotive, telecommunications, military systems and aerospace). Systems integration is a strategic task that pervades business management not only at the technical level but also at the management and strategic levels. This book shows bow and why this new kind of systems integration has evolved into an emerging model of industrial organization whereby firms, and groups of firms join together different types of knowledge, skill and activity, as well as hardware, software and human resources to produce new products for the marketplace. This book is the first to systematically explore systems integration from a business and innovation perspective. Contributors delve deeply into the nature, dimensions and dynamics of the new systems integration, deploying research and analytical techniques from a wide variety of disciplines including the theory of the firm, the history of technology, industrial organization, regional studies, strategic management, and innovation studies. This wealth of research capability provides deep insights into the new model of systems integration and supports this with an abundance of empirical evidence. The book is organized in three main parts. The first part focuses on the history of systems integration. Contributors trace the early history of systems integration using different industrial examples. The second part presents theoretical and analytical aspects of systems integration. Contributions concentrate on the regulatory and cognitive features of systems integration, the relationships between systems integration and regional competitive advantage, and the way in which systems integration supports the competitive advantage of firms. The third part takes industry and firm-level approaches. Contributions focus on different sectors and highlight the specificity of systems integration in various industrial domains, stressing its importance for systems integration in the case of complex capital goods, such as aircraft and telecommunications equipment as well as consumer goods, such as personal computers and automobiles.

    `Review from previous edition This valuable collection of papers gives new insights into systems integration through an understanding of the history, the underlying theoretical frameworks and the identification of emerging trends. The research is of relevance and importance to almost all business sectors.’ Technovation

    What really sets the best managers above the rest? Its their power to build a cadre of employees who have great inner work livesconsistently positive emotions; strong motivation; and favorable perceptions of the organization, their work, and their colleagues. The worst managers undermine inner work life, often unwittingly.

As Teresa Amabile and Steven Kramer explain in The Progress Principle, seemingly mundane workday events can make or break employees inner work lives. But its forward momentum in meaningful workprogressthat creates the best inner work lives. Through rigorous analysis of nearly 12,000 diary entries provided by 238 employees in 7 companies, the authors explain how managers can foster progress and enhance inner work life every day.

The book shows how to remove obstacles to progress, including meaningless tasks and toxic relationships. It also explains how to activate two forces that enable progress: (1) catalystsevents that directly facilitate project work, such as clear goals and autonomyand (2) nourishersinterpersonal events that uplift workers, including encouragement and demonstrations of respect and collegiality.

Brimming with honest examples from the companies studied, The Progress Principle equips aspiring and seasoned leaders alike with the insights they need to maximize their peoples performance.

    “Customers are the heart of any business. But we can’t succeed if we develop only one talk addressed to the ‘average customer.’ Instead we must know each customer and build our individual engagements with that knowledge. If Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is going to work, it calls for skills in Customer Data Integration (CDI). This is the best book that I have seen on the subject. Jill Dych? is to be complimented for her thoroughness in interviewing executives and presenting CDI.”
-Philip Kotler, S. C. Johnson

“In this world of killer competition, hanging on to existing customers is critical to survival. Jill Dych?’s new book makes that job a lot easier than it has been.”
-Jack Trout, author, Differentiate or Die

“Jill and Evan have not only written the definitive work on Customer Data Integration, they’ve made the business case for it. This book offers sound advice to business people in search of innovative ways to bring data together about customers-their most important asset-while at the same time giving IT some practical tips for implementing CDI and MDM the right way.”

-Wayne Eckerson, The Data Warehousing Institute author of Performance Dashboards: Measuring, Monitoring, and Managing Your Business

Whatever business you’re in, you’re ultimately in the customer business. No matter what your product, customers pay the bills. But the strategic importance of customer relationships hasn’t brought companies much closer to a single, authoritative view of their customers. Written from both business and technicalperspectives, Customer Data Integration shows companies how to deliver an accurate, holistic, and long-term understanding of their customers through CDI.

    The authors introduce the foundations of philosophical and moral thinking with cases and readings in criminal justice ethics. The text focuses on practitioner-oriented topics, corrections, juvenile justice, probation, law enforcement, etc. Essential readings define the field; they are presented along with questions designed to help students master the material. This book is an outgrowth of a unique teaching and writing effort, combining the skills and backgrounds of philosopher Daryl Close with those of Nicholas Meier, an academic expert in criminal justice and a former cop.

    If you aren’t playing an active role in your performance appraisals, how can you possibly get anything good out of it?

You can’t. It’s that simple. You don’t run a marriage that way — waiting for your spouse to do something to you. Why would you do it at work?

Managers can’t do it all, even if they are skilled. It’s your job and your career, so work with your supervisor to create a better work environment. Be a real player in your own job success.
But how?

Performance appraisal discussions (and for that matter all of the steps in performance management) provide a forum for genuine, constructive discussion of job performance. You can use this opportunity to:

* review what happened, and identify barriers to your success
* enlist the help of your manager to become a better, happier employee
* clarify your responsibilities and authority levels (what decisions can you make)
* discuss sensitive issues like salary, promotion, job enrichment

Be Active

Be Constructive

Be Involved

Be Successful

But You Have To Do It Well!

Like anything else, it takes some skill to become a constructive, active participant in performance appraisals and to take control of your career. It takes some forethought, a little bit of planning, and an understanding of what performance appraisal should be all about. Managers need to keep up their end (and we have tools for them), but you need to step up.
The good news…

…is that we’ve created a tool that you can read and digest in less than an hour that will help you reduce the discomfort of performance appraisals and increase success. Getting The Most From Performance Appraisals will walk you through how to plan for your meeting, what to say, questions to ask, and HOW to talk constructively.

We’ve created a truly unique aid aimed at helping employees be active and constructive participants in the appraisal process. The principles and behaviors suggested in this helpcard complement those included in the helpcards aimed at managers.

Here’s a list of what’s included:

* Appraisals – An Imperfect Process
* What’s Appraisal For?
* Where Are The Benefits
* What Makes Performance Appraisal Work?
* Preparing For the Review/Appraisal Meeting
* During The Appraisal Meeting
* Surviving Silly Forms
* When You Disagree

Getting The Most From Performance Appraisals For Employees Helpcard (Performance Management Tools For THIS Century)

Performance Management Master Checklist

    What is the most common reason performance appraisals are so uncomfortable for all involved AND seem like so much wasted paperwork?

It’s actually quite simple. Appraisals are awkward and uncomfortable (and useless/costly in terms of time) because managers skip too many of the steps needed to make it work.

The skipped steps are what makes the performance appraisal meaningful to the manager, employee and the organization. These steps are what makes the whole thing work!

The Dangling Appraisal Syndrome

Performance appraisals often fail because they are unconnected to other important aspects of managing and improving performance. The dangling syndrome is caused by missing out important steps. The result? Time, effort and stress put into employee reviews with no positive outcomes. You need all the steps.

Once you understand the steps and shift your focus to improving performance and employee success, you are ready to revitalize a key management tool that can make your life easier. By doing all the steps you:

* tie individual goals and objectives to achieving what’s important for your department and company.
* establish positive expectations about the appraisal meetings so employees see the appraisal meeting as something they want to be involved with.
* increase the ability for employees to monitor their own performance, and communicate all year round about being better at their jobs.
* Lay the groundwork for performance discussions so there are absolutely no surprises during the appraisal meeting.

It boils down to this: Undertake all the steps, become a performance manager and enabler, rather than just a performance appraiser and you’ll spend less time dealing with problems, and more time left to do the things you and only can do.

The Performance Management Master Checklist

The thing is that it’s easy to skip steps because you are busy, and it appears to be efficient. It’s not. The more you cut corners, the more likely you pay big time when you run into situations where employees are not performing up to your potential.

So, we created a checklist you can use to remind yourself of the complete set of steps needed to profit from the performance management/appraisal process, and yes, to make it less uncomfortable, so by the time to actually get to the appraisal, it’s no more than a short 15 minute discussion with each employee. Really!

This helpcard maps out the steps of the performance management process from performance planning to the performance review meeting. Formatted in a checklist format so managers can check off tasks as the are completed. Based on our best selling book – Performance Management – A Briefcase Book, the process outlined is integrated with strategic planning and stresses managers as being helpers and partners in performance improvement

The checklist is formatted to allow employees and managers to tick off completed steps. Steps are grouped as follows:

* Once A Year Overview
* Performance Planning – Preparation
* Performance Planning – Scheduling
* The Planning Meeting
* During the Year Steps
* Performance Review – Preparation
* Performance Review – The Meeting
